Cowichan Bay

System Overview

The Cowichan Bay Sanitary Sewer System was constructed in 1972 and originally consisted of a conventional gravity collection system and an extended-aeration secondary sewage treatment plant. An equalization tank/overflow/storage system was added in 1987, thereby nearly doubling the amount of capacity of the system.

In 2004, the sewage treatment plant was replaced by a pump station and forcemain to the Joint Utilities Board lagoons for sewage treatment and disposal, fulfilling the CVRD’s commitment under the Central Sector Liquid Waste Management Plan.
