Business Expansion
Economic Development Cowichan (EDC) has developed a business retention and expansion program called Cowichan First.
Cowichan First is a unique program that helps existing businesses grow and expand therefore strengthening the local economy. The program is run in partnership with community organizations and business leaders who are committed to helping local businesses become more competitive. The program works to find solutions to individual business issues and develops strategies to improve the overall business climate.
The EDC has chosen business retention and expansion as an economic development priority for a number of reasons. First, it is important for the economic development agency to understand opportunities for growth in the region as well as concerns and barriers to business success. Second, studies show that up to 80% of new jobs come from the expansion of existing firms therefore supporting existing businesses becomes crucial to the economic health of the region.
Cowichan First is part of a long-term economic growth strategy. For more information or if you are interested in participating in the program, please contact Kathy Lachman, Business Development Officer, EDC at 746-7880.
