General Emergency Information
Emergency Public Information efforts will focus on providing prompt, authoritative and understandable emergency information to the public during emergencies/disasters.  This information generally will be of an instructional nature focusing on such things as warning, evacuation and shelter information.

Every effort will be made to report the facts as accurately as possible and provide advice concerning necessary protection actions. Factual information will be a major aspect of the program.  All information concerning an emergency will be coordinated through the Regional Emergency Operations Centre (REOC).

Depending on the severity of the emergency, telephone communications may be disrupted. Local and regional radio and television stations without emergency power may also be off the air. If this occurs, public address systems on emergency vehicles and door-to-door sweeps may be initiated.

Emergency Public Information Resources
  • Radio - 89.7 SUN FM is our primary local emergency information media (keep a battery, wind-up and/or solar powered radio easily accessible).
  • Press Releases will be prepared as appropriate and sent to local media vial email and/or fax where these services are available. Local radio and television media will be given priority to ensure timely information updates to the public. Where possible these updates will be provided so that the media can broadcast information at the top of every hour. This will ensure that the public can receive the most current information in a timely manner.
    • When the Internet is available, vital information will be updated regularly on this page of the CVRD website and the Emergency Alert button will flash red to emphasize activation.
    • Inquiry Centre - toll free number may be issued during a time of major disaster.
    • Canadian Red Cross - Help finding loved ones in the disaster area (family reunification).
    • Marquee signs around the community (like the one at the Island Savings Centre and Thrifty Foods) may periodically provide emergency information reminders like which radio station to tune to for emergency information.
    • Emergency Management BC provides regular provincial updates at EmergencyInfoBC
