Alternatives to Burning

There are many alternatives to open burning in the Cowichan Valley. Remember, by not burning your waste, you’re helping to clear the air for your neighbours while also saving valuable resources for reuse. Yard and garden materials like small branches and leaves can be recycled for free at many convenient locations in the CVRD. Check out the new Cowichan Recyclopedia for details and hundreds more recycling ideas!

Curbside Collection
Nearly all single-family residential homes as well as some multi-family homes in the Cowichan region receive curbside pick-up of recyclable materials and garbage. Even better, there’s no limit on the amount of recycling that you can set out at the curbside! Unless you have specifically requested an exemption from your local curbside program, chances are that you’re already paying for the service as part of your annual utility bill. Why not take advantage of the service and recycle your waste instead of burning it? For more information on curbside programs offered in the Cowichan Region, click here

Free Yard Waste Drop-off
Unlimited quantities of yard and garden debris can be dropped off for free at any CVRD Recycling Depot as well as at Central Landscape Supplies in Cobble Hill. Click here for more information. Yard and garden materials are composted at a facility near Nanaimo where they are turned into Class A Compost and reused for landscaping, lawns and gardens.

Landclearing Debris and Stumps
Got stumps? These can also be dropped off at the CVRD Bings Creek Recycling Depot for a fee. Click here for more information.

Several companies in the Valley also offer chipping and grinding services for large landclearing debris and stumps.
