COVID-19 & Wildfire Response
Effective at noon (Pacific time) on Thursday, April 16, 2020, most open burning activities will be prohibited throughout British Columbia to reduce the likelihood of human-caused wildfires, although campfires will still be allowed.
The following activities will be prohibited, and these restrictions will remain in effect until the public is otherwise notified:
- Category 2 open fires;
- Category 3 open fires;
- Resource Management open fires;
- the use of fireworks;
- the use of sky lanterns; and
- the use of burn barrels or burn cages of any size or description (except when used for a campfire).
A poster explaining the different categories of open burning is available online: www.gov.bc.ca/openfireregs
These open burning prohibitions will reduce demands on firefighting resources and help protect the health and safety of the public, as well as BC Wildfire Service staff. They will also help reduce the impact of wildfire smoke on air quality and public health during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Additionally, the Province had restricted open burning across much of the Cowichan region. This provincial order overrides the Cowichan Valley Regional District Smoke Control Regulation Bylaw, which permits open burning between March 15 and April 15 when the venting index is ‘good.’ The BC Air Quality Map highlights those areas covered by the provincial order, and additional information on the provincial order can be found in the ministry news release.
Contacting Fire Rescue Services
Within the Cowichan Valley, there are 18 Volunteer Fire Departments and 21 fire stations.
Please call 9-1-1 only for real emergencies. Volunteers get paged from their regular work and family lives to respond to emergencies.
The halls are not manned, so you may need to leave a message for non-emergency issues in your area at the following numbers:
