To waste food is to throw away all the resources that went into making that food, including water and fertilizers to grow the food, fuel and electricity to harvest, store and transport the food, land cleared for growing space and a wide range of materials to package and protect the food. Sadly, one third or more of the food produced on our planet is wasted. We can all help by changing the way we think about and consume food.

Composting in the CVRD
Some food waste, like banana peels, is unavoidable. Make sure this waste stays out of the landfill and bring it to a recycling centre or use an at-home composter. Find a local supplier of composters here. If you compost at home, ensure you are composting safely and not attracting wildlife. Under the provincial Wildlife Act it is an offense to attract dangerous wildlife, such as bears. Protect wildlife and your community by being bear aware.
