Residents within the Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD) are serviced by garbage and recycling curbside collection. The CVRD directly services residents in electoral areas, while the municipalities of Duncan, Ladysmith, Lake Cowichan, and North Cowichan service their residents. Not all recyclable items can be directly recycled at the curb, some need to be taken to a CVRD Recycling Center Depot. To find out what can be recycled where, be sure the check out the Recyclopedia.
Because there is no landfill in the CVRD, non-recyclable waste is sent from transfer stations to landfills outside of the region. Most of the CVRD's garbage is currently sent to a landfill in Washington State, USA. Residents, businesses and contractors are also able to bring waste to a CVRD Recycling Center Depot.
The Cowichan Valley has a strong local recycling industry and one of the best recycling rates in BC. Our region also has the highest rate of contamination in curbside recycling on Vancouver Island. Last year, the CVRD launched the campaign Recycle 2.0: Recycle right at the curb.
